We are:switching to Qt4, which brings a host of new capabilities when it comes to visuals (via the Arthur paint engine) and application design (improved threading, model/view), as well as having a smaller memory footprint and allowing us to write non-GUI apps that don't require an X server

Other additional features include extensive use of SVG graphics which allow for resolution independent images, improvements to X.org's acceleration architecture, redesigning applications so they are able to be optimized better. Seigo explains that 'For example, the desktop and panels are being merged into one app, which also provides for functionality now only available in Superkaramba. The resulting design allows us to much more efficiently share application launch, graphics, and geometry coordination data while also avoiding the overhead of multiple processes where just one will do quite fine. This will allow people to have quite flashy desktops (or even simple plain ones) that are snappier and take fewer resources.'"

KDE 3.5 VMware Player Image Released

SUSE developer Stephan Binner has released a VMware image of SUSE 10 with KDE 3.5 installed, enabling people to run KDE 3.5 inside any platform supported by the freeware VMware player. "I created an image which contains a standard KDE desktop installation of SUSE Linux 10.0 OSS, upgraded to KDE 3.5 including KOffice 1.4.2 excluding non-KDE applications. It's a fully working installation so don't forget to install and try some additional KDE applications - and to run the security update when you're asked to."

Biren informs us that eMagine has released a new product called EyeBud. Designed for Apple's oh-so-popular iPod Video, the device gives users a wearable video display (see picture).For the price of two iPods ($600), users will be able to experience video on the iPod as if it were on a 105" screen, 12 feet away. The EyeBud also comes with a separate power pack and control module. It's not all smiles, however. EyeBud wearers, rather than maintaining the Apple chic, do face the risk of looking like the Borg.EyeBuds aside, perhaps of more interesting iPod accessory news is information from iLounge suggesting that FM transmitters, currently illegal in the UK, could soon become legal. FM transmitters can be plugged into iPods to allow them to play music in cars, via the car radio. OFCOM, the UK regulator for communications, has been working with companies to find a legal way of producing devices such as Griffin's iTrip; compliant devices could be available later this year.
